Lissoni String Quartet to play

The Hilo Woman’s Club presents “Let Christmas Begin,” a magical holiday classical concert featuring Hilo’s own Lissoni String Quartet at 6:30 p.m. today at the club, 7 Lele St.

The public is invited to experience a joyous, uplifting and enchanted evening of traditional holiday and classical music selections.

Tickets, available at the door, are $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 and younger.

Refreshments will be served. Space is limited.

‘Embrace’ to screen at Prince Kuhio 9

“Embrace: The Movie,” a documentary about loving your body and positive body image, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Regal Prince Kuhio 9 theaters, 111 E. Puainako St. in Hilo.

There also will be a Q&A session with Rabbi Rachel Short and the Rev. Cathy Hough.

Body image activist Taryn Brumfitt wrote, produced and directed the film. “Embrace” is told from the point of view of Brumfitt as she traverses the globe talking to experts, women in the street and well-known personalities about the alarming rates of body image issues that are seen in people of all body types.

Tickets are $11. The film is for everyone, but the recommended viewing age for young girls is 13 and older.

HPA book club to meet Dec. 8

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Ko Kakou Student Union, Upper Campus.

The book club meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.

Lois Inman, Dyer Memorial librarian, and Jaime Johnson, Upper School English teacher, will lead the group. The current book selection is “Commonwealth” by bestselling author Ann Patchett.

“Commonwealth” tells the story about how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes the lives of two families. The Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond based on a shared disillusionment with their parents while spending summers together in Virginia.
